STORYTELLER WINE LABELS
9-20 September, 2009
Hungarian National Gallery
The use of labels on wine bottles doesn’t have too long a history as the appearance of them and their widespread use are closely connected to the use of glass bottles. Our exhibition invites visitors on an imaginary journey to the wine regions of Hungary, through the medium of wine labels, which originate from various periods. The exhibited wine labels come from the collection of Dr. Fülöp Mihály (grand-master of the Szent Vince Wine Order), which stands at 55,000 items. The labels provide a key source in researching individual wine regions as they can give information on type stock, the estate relations of the time and also the types of wines. At the same time, the symbols of the various political periods also appear on the labels. Th rough the medium of wine labels, the exhibition aims to outline the history of wineproducing regions at home and abroad from the 1870’s to the present day.
